David Vegter fights back
Mixed feelings for David Vegter when talking about Santa Pod Raceway and the start of the new season. At his last visit to his favourite track, the 2009 Euro Finals, the Dutch Pro Modified driver was involved in a nasty accident that damaged his brand new ’67 Camaro so badly that he will have to miss the start of the new season.

After several highly successful seasons in Super Gas and Super Comp David Vegter and his brother Jos decided to step up to their favourite class, Pro Modified. They invested all their money in a state of the art Andy Robinson built ’67 Camaro. The car made its shake down runs in June 2009 at Drachten and had its European debut at the Veidec Festival at Mantorp Park. Four perfect runs and 6.6 seconds as a personal best was a dream start.

All his fellow racers were impressed by the driving and tuning skills of the new team. What should have been the highlight of their maiden Pro Mod season ended in a nightmare as a nasty crash badly damaged the six runs old Camaro. As everybody will have seen on the You Tube video David aborted his run and rolled to the finish line when he was hit from behind at 200 km/h by Ingo Rolla’s out of control Dodge. David was not hurt but the body, chassis, rear axle and many other parts of the Camaro were badly damaged.

David: “Our first runs with the car were perfect. The car felt so good and then this happened and even worse I could not do anything about it. Because all our money was already in that car we immediately knew it would be hard to make the start of the new season. It felt great the other Pro Mod drivers collected money for us and we could start to rebuild the car.

We spend many hours and a lot of money in the workshop this winter and at this moment the body and rear axle are in racing condition again. What’s left is the chassis work. That has to be done by Andy Robinson and is for at least two weeks work. But we have to find the funds for that. We are working hard on sponsorship deals but it’s not easy at the moment. If we find a partner we can be on track pretty soon, otherwise it will be late in the season. We will do everything we can to race this season.” Let’s hope we will see David and Jos with the Camaro at the strip as soon as possible.
