Super Twin Bike Review
Lorenz Stäuble
doubles for the Erbacher Fat Attack Team

This class had its suprising moments even during qualifying. The 2009 Champion, Sweden’s Per Bengtsson, did not qualify for the 8-bike field. He had said, before the Main Event, that he is out to get the European records in ET and speed this year. The record is held by Anders Karling and was set during the 2004 Nitrolympix at Hockenheim. Winning the championship is not Bengtsson’s primary goal this year. So that was it for him after two runs in qualifying.
Lorenz Stäuble from the Erbacher/Fat Attack stable was low qualifier at 6.65sec., followed by Roel Koedam at 6.90sec. and, third, Job Heezen (the man who won the last two UEM rounds in the Supertwin class) with a 6.91sec. run. Ian Turburville tried to make the field on his last appearance in the Supertwin class but unfortunately missed out.

Eliminations: Hans Olaf Rolfstadt is one of six riders who all come from a small place in the middle of Norway called Toten. They all race in the Supertwin class. Rolfstadt was drawn against low qualifier Stäuble and had no chance with a losing 8.05sec. to Stäuble’s 6.68sec. Trond Hoiberget is also from Toten and was keen to defeat his fellow Toten racer, Vidar Ravnsborg. It turned out easy when his fellow Norwegian was shut of after the burnout, allowing Hoiberget a solo into the semi-final.

Next up – surprise, surprise – was another Toten racer, Hans Olaf Olstad, facing Roel Koedam. With a superb .0017sec. light, Koedam was away first and Olstad never caught up, losing at 7.16sec. to Koedam’s 6.77sec. So the Godfather 7 bike of Koedam/Pels seems to have overcome the problems it had last year, making the team a real championship contender. The next match was Mäenpää vs. Heezen. Could Job Heezen make this his third victory in a row? He took an easy solo into the semi-final when the Finn couldn’t make the run.

Semifinals: The first match was an all-Dutch affair, Koedam against Heezen. Heezen left first; Koedam caught up but then his bike threw off the blower belt, advancing Heezen to the Final. In the other semi, Hoiberget holeshot Stäuble but Stäuble, deadly consistent throughout the weekend, caught Hoiberget before the line, his 6.77sec. good enough to beat the Norwegian’s 7.37.

Final: Heezen against Stäuble. After nearly identical RT's, Lo ran low ET of the meet (6.60sec.) to beat Heezen’s 6.81. Job Heezen still leads the 2010 Championship in a fast, exciting class which should provide more close racing throughout the year.
