Top Fuel Bike Review
Steve Woolatt takes
Top Fuel Bike win

The UEM Bike classes have changed in some respects this year. Pro Stock Bike and Nitro Supertwin Bike are still the same. The riders in these classes compete to crown individual UEM champions at the end of the year. Top Fuel Bike has changed. Until the end of last year, the nitro-burning bikes ran alongside the turbocharged or NOS-supported Funnybikes and Promodbikes. This time the nitroburners will battle alone for the UEM European Top Fuel Bike crown. The Funnybikes have their own series, the UEM Funny Bike Cup. We shall concentrate on the UEM classes in this report.
Top Fuel Bike: This is the second round of the 2010 UEM European Championship. The first round was held at Kunmadaras in Hungary and was won by Kai Selkämää from Finland; runner up was Dutch pilot Rene van den Berg. This time at Santa Pod, five riders were competing for the event win: Selkämää, Berg, Teboul, Woollatt and Carey. The whole field was capable of running 6-second ET's. Steve Woollatt was low qualifier with a 7.03sec. run. He has some new parts on the bike and is getting back to his old pace as the new equipment starts to work. Kai Selkämää was second at 7.11sec. and Rene van den Berg third at 7.66. Qualifying was reduced to two rounds. We lost the first day to constant rain. Eric Teboul again had bad luck with his 6.2sec. bike, making just one run before withdrawing with technical problems.

On raceday, Woollatt had a bye run into the semi-final, clocking 6.60sec. to prove that he is back on track again. The second pairing pitted Steve Carey on his Purple Princess 2 against Rene van den Berg. Rene was first on the lights but had to abort his run. That advanced Carey to the semi’s with a comfortable 6.94. Kai Selkämää was up next against Frenchman Eric Teboul. Teboul was not able to run, so Kai moved easily into the semi-final. In a field of only five contestants, Selkämää was the lucky one to earn a bye run into the final and took an easy cruise down the track. The other semi-final featured Woollatt and Carey, the only riders who had managed 6-second ET's thus far during the weekend. Woollatt led all the way down the track, first on the lights, first to 60", and first to the finish line, clocking 6.65sec. to Carey’s losing 6.99sec. to advance into the final against Kai Selkämää.

Thus the number one and two qualifiers would meet in the final. Woollatt had the ET advantage over the weekend but Kai had won the first round in Hungary and was leading in the championship points. So who would win the Main Event? Both ran great lights but Woollatt was in no mood to take prisoners. He won by .021sec. over Selkämää (6.69sec. vs. 6.89sec.). The Finn, however, still leads the Championship and the next race is the Nitro Nationals at Alastaro, Kai's homesoil.
