In qualifying, Anders Abrahamsson (4-cylinder) finished on pole position at 7.24sec., followed by reigning UEM champion Ulf Ögge (2-cylinder) at 7.26sec. Then came European record holder Dave Beck (4-cylinder) at 7.33sec. and Gert Jan Laseur with a 7.40sec. run on his 2 cylinder Buell. Altogether there were 15 riders for a 16-bike field.
That secured low qualifier Abrahamsson a bye run into round two. The new kid on the block from Germany is Karl Heinz Weikum. Qualified number 9 in only his second race on a Pro Stock Bike, he was pitted against Greece’s Stavros Svrachnos in the first round. Weikum was away first but hit trouble shifting into third gear, losing to Svrachnos’ 7.47sec. despite recording a new personal best of 7.64. Weikum never expected to run so well, having had to forgo some newly-ordered parts held up in a German toll station. He will be back at Alastaro.
The next match was an easy one for Laseur, Richard Gipp having no chance to win. Len Paget red-lit in the following pairing against Kenneth Vik, putting Vik into the second round with a cracking 7.25sec. run. Ögge had a struggle with Hungarian rider Zoltan Toth. Ögge’s Buell took time getting into the run but caught “Totti” before the stripe. Fredrik Fredlund was up next against Britain’s Martin Bishop, a 7.38sec. run to Bishop’s losing 7.64sec. securing Fredrik’s round win. Dave Beck had an easy win against fellow Brit Martin Newbury, as had Jesper Thiel over Kalle Lyren.
