Pro Stock Bike Review
Ulf Ögge makes it 2 out of 2 possible wins this year

In the battle of 2-cylinder bikes against 4-cylinder bikes, who will top the pile this year?
In qualifying, Anders Abrahamsson (4-cylinder) finished on pole position at 7.24sec., followed by reigning UEM champion Ulf Ögge (2-cylinder) at 7.26sec. Then came European record holder Dave Beck (4-cylinder) at 7.33sec. and Gert Jan Laseur with a 7.40sec. run on his 2 cylinder Buell. Altogether there were 15 riders for a 16-bike field.

That secured low qualifier Abrahamsson a bye run into round two. The new kid on the block from Germany is Karl Heinz Weikum. Qualified number 9 in only his second race on a Pro Stock Bike, he was pitted against Greece’s Stavros Svrachnos in the first round. Weikum was away first but hit trouble shifting into third gear, losing to Svrachnos’ 7.47sec. despite recording a new personal best of 7.64. Weikum never expected to run so well, having had to forgo some newly-ordered parts held up in a German toll station. He will be back at Alastaro.

The next match was an easy one for Laseur, Richard Gipp having no chance to win. Len Paget red-lit in the following pairing against Kenneth Vik, putting Vik into the second round with a cracking 7.25sec. run. Ögge had a struggle with Hungarian rider Zoltan Toth. Ögge’s Buell took time getting into the run but caught “Totti” before the stripe. Fredrik Fredlund was up next against Britain’s Martin Bishop, a 7.38sec. run to Bishop’s losing 7.64sec. securing Fredrik’s round win. Dave Beck had an easy win against fellow Brit Martin Newbury, as had Jesper Thiel over Kalle Lyren.

Round two: Abrahamsson appeared to have lost against Svrachnos but, owing to a blue line violation, the Greek rider was disqualified and Abrahamsson was reinstated into the semi-final. Vik and Laseur battled to side-by-side 7.3’s, Laseur getting to the line first by a very small margin. The next pair featured the reigning number one and two. Ögge, the champion, had an easy ride to the semi’s when Fredlund’s bike cut off at the hit. The last match was an easy one for Jesper Thiel, hitting a fine 7.21 after Dave Beck’s red light.

The semi-finals included three Buells (2-cylinder) and one Suzuki (4-cylinder). Laseur took a holeshot win over Abrahamsson, 7.29sec. to a losing 7.25, to advance into his first UEM Pro Stock final. Ulf Ögge won the other semi with a .0028 sec. margin over Thiel, the pair racing side by side to the line, 7.14sec to 7.19 sec. Gosh, what a race!

Final: Ögge, who had won the first round at Hungary, was in the final again. For Laseur, it was his first. Sweden’s Ögge did it with style, recording Low ET of the Meet at 7.16sec. to a losing 7.28sec., a personal best for Laseur. Ögge is building a substantial lead and is plainly the one to beat this year. Excitement will grow as the season develops, so don’t miss the action at the Nitro Nationals at Alastaro.
