Super Twin Bike Review

Hans Olav Olstad, fast and consistent

Great racing and big upsets abounded in Super Twin. There were early exits for favourites Lorenz Stäuble and Job Heezen and a surprise finalist in local hero Ismo Mäenpää. But Hans Olav Olstad was the man of the match and the only one to achieve the right combination of speed and consistency to win the race. The Norwegian’s 6.74 seconds in qualifying and another three 6-second runs in eliminations were more than enough to secure his first win of the season
Hans Olav Olstad opened qualifying in almost perfect style by putting a 6.74 ET on the scoreboard. The Norwegian’s weekend might have ended right there: so happy was he with his run, he forgot to brake and wound up in the grass at the end of the track. Another 6.88 from his third run made it clear that Olstad and his bike were still in good shape. A great 6.77 from Lorenz Stäuble on Saturday morning pushed Job Heezen (6.85sec) into the number three qualifying position. More improvements followed in the fourth and last qualifying session.

Trond Hoiberget dipped into the sixes (6.96sec) and took the number four spot away from Roel Koedam. But a few minutes later, Jan Sturla Hegre improved to 6.92 seconds (his first 6sec ever) to claim that fourth spot. Koedam could not improve and found himself back in 6th while Ismo Mäenpää and Samu Kemppainen changed places in 7th and 8th. A surprising non-qualifier was Svein Olaf Rolfstad. A big engine explosion in run two on the start line was followed by more problems in run four. There was big disappointment too for Jaska Salakari who did so well in Top Fuel Bike. The Finn had to shut off three times and could not even complete one run in Super Twin. Martijn de Haas failed to find the power and his 8.8 seconds was not enough to qualify in the top eight.

The first round of eliminations produced great racing. Olstad ran another 6.74sec and sidelined Kemppainen. But the best confrontation was Heezen against Koedam. Koedam left first and at the eighth-mile the former Top Fuel champion was still in front. But Heezen came back over the last part of the track to take the win with a 0.05sec margin. Their times: Heezen 6.72 (!) and 6.83 for Koedam.

The biggest surprise of the meeting was the first round exit of Stäuble. Seemingly in a winning position, the Swiss rider encountered engine problems allowing Mäenpää to take the match. There was another big upset in the semi-finals. Heezen was leading in his race against Mäenpää but lost power and the Finn took the win with a margin of only 0.2sec. Mäenpää’s 6.99 was his first-ever 6sec ET. Olstad advanced to the final with a 6.97 because Hegre, who had seen Hoiberget forced to shut off in the first round, suffered problems himself and had to abort his run. So Olstad had to face first-time finalist and local hero Mäenpää. But Olstad was  in a class of his own at Alastaro. A great 6.83 gave the Norwegian the win although the Finn did a fine job again by running 7.06sec.
