Top Fuel Bike Review

First win for Petri Paljakka

In only his second Top Fuel Bike race ever, Petri Paljakka took his maiden win at Alastaro. And was there a better place to do this than on Finnish home ground in an all-Finnish final against Jaska Salakari? The Finnish Top Fuel Bike rookie made his first victory feel even better by setting two new personal bests in the final.

With four competitors, qualifying was not an issue in Top Fuel Bike. But what a surprise to see Super Twin regular Jaska Salakari in Top Fuel Bike with team-mate Kari Rajala’s 2009 Super Twin bike. Work commitments make it impossible for Rajala to race this season so Salakari decided to enter the bike in Top Fuel. And the surprise was even bigger when Salakari took the number one qualifying spot with a stunning 6.692 seconds in only his second run on the bike. A 6.843 in his fourth attempt showed the 6.6 (at the end still good for the number one position) was no coincidence. There were big problems in qualifying for the the championship leader, Kai Selkämaa. The Finn torched a head in the second qualifying session and had to skip the last two attempts. His 14.583 seconds put him into the number four spot. There were problems too for René van den Berg. On his second run the Dutchman broke a gearbox but the 7.324 seconds on the third run gave Van den Berg the number three qualifying position. Petri Paljakka was the only man to make four qualifying runs. After his UEM Hungary Top Fuel debut, the Finn had to skip the Main Event but showed great progress on the ex-Ian King bike by taking the number three position with a 7.354 and, even more importantly, never encountered any technical problems.

In the semi-final between Salakari and Selkämaa, the leader in the championship was away first but had problems again and had to shut off at the 1/8 mile. But even without these problems it would have been difficult for Selkämaa because Salakari put another 6.8 on the scoreboard. In the other semi-final there were problems again for Van den Berg. The Dutchman had a better reaction time but, when the drive belt broke, his chance to make up some points on Selkämaa were gone. That handed the win to Paljakka, with 7.21 seconds taking another 0.1sec off his qualifying time.

The outcome of the semi-finals gave the home crowd something to cheer about because the final was an all-Finnish affair with veteran racer Salakari facing rookie Paljakka. But the final was already over after the burn out. Salakari had to shut off when a bang made it clear there was a serious problem. That handed the win to Paljakka in only his second-ever UEM Top Fuel Bike race. And the Finn took the win in great style. A 6.668 at 347kph were by far his personal-best time and speed. Paljakka will be a strong force to be reckoned with during the rest of the season. There is more to come from this Finnish rookie.
