Pro Stock Bike Review
Close racing, a new European record, but Ulf Ögge wins again
Pro Stock Bike had its best
race ever at Alastaro – a bump spot of 7.39 seconds, loads of
personal bests, two new European speed records and a string of
7.1sec runs in eliminations. At the end Ulf Ögge emerged as the
winner again but his 7.200sec against the 7.205sec of Kenneth Vik
made it clear how close Pro Stock Bike was at Alastaro.
After the first day of qualifying, Ulf Ögge was in the number one spot with a great 7.21sec, followed by Anders Abrahamsson at 7.28 and Kenneth Vik at7.34. But it was nothing compared to what happened in the third round of qualifying. Maybe it was the best Pro Stock qualifying session ever seen in Europe. Vik went into the number one spot with a 7.202 at 302.00kph/187.65mph! If he could back up this speed it would be a new European record. The Norwegian did it on the fourth run (299.25kph) to reset Roger Pettersson’s 301.24kph from Hockenheim 2004! But there was more excitement in qualifying session number three. Ögge improved to 7.209, there was a stunning 7.21 for Fredrik Fredlund, Abrahamsson stepped up by 0.05sec to 7.232 and Gert-Jan Laseur improved to 7.34sec but stayed fifth. There were new personal bests for Kalle Lyrén (7.37sec) and Gabriella Nikolovska (7.39sec). With a personal best of 7.38sec (achieved on Friday) Harri Piensalmi stayed in seventh position. The fourth session saw few improvements so the bump spot finished at 7.39, not so long ago good for a top-three qualifying position! Stavros Svrachnos was one of the surprising non-qualifiers. The Greek clocked 7.60sec in the first round but then ran into all manner of problems and found himself back in tenth spot. Stavros Svrachnos |
Was 7.2sec quick? On Sunday the Alastaro track suited the Pro Stock Bikes even more. In the first round of eliminations Vik surprised with a stunning 7.17sec to beat Nikolovska (7.31sec), fresh personal bests for both riders. Abrahamsson stepped up to 7.14sec to beat Laseur and his speed of 303.71kph/188.72mph was the first leg of another new European speed record. With a 7.15, Ögge did not lag far behind and sent home Piensalmi (7.29!). Because Lyrén had had to shut off after the burnout, Fredlund was presented an easy trip to the semi-final but still ran a 7.21. There was a great match-up in the semi-final between Vik and former Veidec team mate Abrahamsson. With a 0.002sec advantage, Abrahamsson had the better reaction time and was still in front at the 1/8 mile, but Vik started to make up ground and snatched the win with a 7.17 against a 7.19 for Abrahamsson. But Ambrahamsson’s speed of 302.69kph was enough to back up his 303.71kph from the first round and reset Vik’s one-day-old record. In the other semi-final Fredlund had to give up his run but that did not prevent Ögge from running another 7.15. That produced a final between reigning European champion Ögge and Vik.
