FIA Pro Modified - Review Round #1 2014
This
was another frustrating weekend at the drag races as rain disrupted
qualifying and washed out Bank Holiday Monday’s eliminations
altogether.
The
opening qualifying session rolled out of the lanes at 7.15pm on
Saturday evening, and ended abruptly not long after. Mats Eriksson’s
Green Goblin, with a new chassis beneath its familiar body, got out of
shape and clipped both walls. The driver was fine but the car will need
some rebuilding before Alastaro. As the debris was being cleared away,
the rain returned and the session was not only cancelled, but the
results annulled.
Michael Gullqvist A new Q1 was scheduled for Sunday morning, the first of three sessions that would be completed that day. By the end, Marc Meihuizen and Michael Gullqvist had both dipped into the 5-second/240mph zone. Looming behind them in the 6.10’s were Bruno Bader Bruno Bader, winner of last year’s FIA European Finals on this track, and Robert Joosten, whose Easter 6.068 at Santa Pod’s Festival Of Power had lain down an early-season gauntlet to his competitors. Roger Johansson Fifth qualifier Roger Johansson needed a masterful driving job to keep his gleaming black Mustang off the wall on his last qualifying pass and sixth qualifier Norbert Kuno was one of two racers to set fresh personal bests. British Pro Mod newcomer Chris Isaacs wrapped up his licensing procedure with new ET and speed PBs on his last attempt. Roger Moore Mattias Wulcan David Vegter |
Team Meihuizen Tero Laukkanen Tero Laukkanen will have been disappointed at the original Q1’s annulment, having delivered his best figures of the weekend on his first-ever pass down the Santa Pod track. A 6.310sec/221.45mph/356,39km/h effort would have secured him eighth spot but he had to settle for a next-best 6.758, good for 11th, in Sunday’s Q3. Jean Dulamon Jean Dulamon’s fastest pass (204.16mph/328,56km/h) also came in the annulled Q1, but Sunday’s new Q1 produced his quickest ET in more than three years, 6.876, to place him 13th. After a day’s rain and track-drying, Pro Mods were called to the lanes to begin eliminations late on Monday afternoon, perhaps more in hope than expectation. Three cars actually made it down to the collection area before the drizzle returned and the event was called off.
