Methanol Dragster Review
Main Event The
first round of the 2012 FIA European Drag Racing championships was
beset with weather problems that reduced the qualifying sessions and
took eliminations to the closing seconds of the day. Seven teams were
competing for a place in eliminations and championship points.
Qualifying was one of the most exciting that we've seen, with new
personal bests being set by several teams. In round one of qualifying
Manty Bugeja set the pace with an off the trailer. 5.3536/265 mph,
which was not a complete surprise, given the presence of ace tuner Norm
Grimes in his pit area over the weekend. Dennis Habermann ran his first
ever sub 5.40 run, recording 5.3744/250.59 and Chris Polidano opened
the scoring with a 5.4000/266. Esko Raisvuo was unlucky when a main
fuel line burst at the throttle hit away from the line and he didn't
record a time while Timo Habermann had ignition problems, slowing the
car and leaving him slowest in the class.
The second session was even better than the first, with Esko recording a time (5.957/244) on a ride that saw him moving all around the width of his lane. Dave Wilson improved to a 5.365/265 and Timo Habermann found the means to run a 5.4379 for 5th place. Manty Bugeja couldn't improve, experiencing a small explosion at the top end but nothing too expensive. Rain stopped any qualifying on Sunday, so after only 2 rounds of qualifying it was on with eliminations on Monday once the rain stopped for long enough to get the cars out on the track. First out were Chris Polidano and Timo Habermann, who nailed a holeshot on his opponent to win with a slower 5.4574/259 to a 5.3913/264, a new Personal Best for Chris. The winning margin was 0.0032 seconds, just over 1 foot (37 cm) at the finish line ! |
The next pairing was Wilson and Raisvuo, and
Grumpy didn't hang about, running 5.435/263 to claim his place in the
semis. Dennis Habermann ran a new Personal best of 5.3526/263 against
Krister Johansson, for whom a 5.4405/264 wasn't enough. Manty Bugeja
had a bye in round one, but went for lane choice in round 2 instead of
saving parts, running 5.3896/266.
In the semi finals it was Manty Bugeja versus Timo Habermann. As always, Timo cut a very fast light and was away first but sheer horsepower and saw him caught and overtaken by Bugeja who ran an incredible 5.2920/259 mph – the fastest ever run in Europe and the first blown methanol car into the 5.20s outside the US. Once again there was a puff of smoke from Bugejas car at the top end and it was very close – 0.03 seconds between them at the finish line. The others semi pitted Dave Wilson against Dennis Habermann. Once again we saw a 'Habermann holeshot', but this time it wasn't enough. Wilson continued to improve and ran 5.3233/268 while Dennis could only manage 5.444/260. The final was decide in the pits, with Manty Bugeja unable to repair the damage in time and being a no-show, meaning he couldn't attempt to back up his previous 5.29. Dave Wilson stepped on the gas for a 5.3398/262 solo to take the win, points and trophy back to Farnborough. |
