Eurodragster.com Pit Notes Main Event Santa Pod Raceway UK
Friday June 1st 2012

Super Street Bike racer Dave Smith brought his new self-built bike to the event after a couple of test passes earlier in May. He said "The bike was built by me and has as many British parts as we can. I tested using 6lb of boost and ran 8.3. Today we want to raise the boost to 20lb and we will hopefully run a seven." Dave encountered problems down track and will now aim to get a quick pass on the clocks during qualifying on Saturday. The bike has a Hays clutch replacing the previous slider clutch.

Super Pro ET racer Tom van der Wijden has owned his black Chevelle for two years and raced it in Pro ET running in the tens last season. Over the winter, the engine was replaced with a 555cu in Reher-Morrison unit which has run the car down into the 9.0s zone. The car runs a Powerglide trans and was built by the team. Sponsorship comes from WVB Holland and Tom's company www.stepaside.nl which provides US performance parts.

Super Pro ET racer Tom Atkinson licensed at the Classic Ford Show last Sunday and this is his first championship event. Tom ended the day qualified eleventh with a best ET a breakout 8.80. He said "Setting the dial-in is a decision between my Dad, Kirstie and I and we all have input. Kirstie gave me an L plate for my birthday and after I got my license, she gave me a P plate."

Super Pro ET racer Marc Henney is delighted with Santa Pod on his first visit here. "I have a new chassis and ran a perfect ET on my first pass with it" he said. The chassis, built by Mike Bos Racecars in Tennessee, has mounted in it a Big Block Chevy with 620 cu in on E85 ethanol and a Dominator carb. Marc is joined by teammates Stefan and Marc. He said "The car is 70kg heavier than the old chassis and my best run so far is 7.58 compared with 7.57 of the older car," indicating a more efficient chassis design as well as more robust construction.

Super Pro ET racer Johan Oomen bought his Dodge Viper in 2011 from Gun Lake Performance in the US as a former Pro Mod car. He said "I had it resprayed and put my old QMP Racing Engines motor in it. I am using a single stage of nitrous but have a second stage if needed. The engine puts out 1100hp without nitrous and another 500hp with both stages. Johan, who organises the Drachten races, will run the car there and at Hockenheim as well as the Euro Finals.

Pro Mod racer Bert-Ove Olofsson is at Santa Pod for the first time since 1991 when he ran a street car. The bubbletop Chevy Impala he runs was built by his company Bertans Racecars which does work for various Nordic-based customers. The Impala ran a 5.97 in testing at Tierp in May and Bert-Ove is aided by US tuner Jon Salemi of Resolution Racing Services, whose client list includes the Al-Anabi ADRL Pro Extreme team.

Super Gas racer Stefan Reffeltrath, pictured with wife Anneke, bought his Chevy Nova from Wouter van Leersum turnkey. Stevan is racing the car for the first time at this event. He said "I drove a Sportsman ET Pontiac Firebird to a best of 13.2. This car is more difficult to prepare as it has a throttle stop and transbrake

Super Gas racer Dan Page is pictured left working out the combination with Rob Stanley . Dan said "I have a new Scott Shafiroff ctae engine rated at 850hp and have installed a throttle stop for the first time. I plan to run quick this morning and then adjust the throttle stop on the following pass." Dan's thanks go to Jon Giles for donating the throttle stop.

Pro ET racer Nic Williams had this broken transmission part which has led to the team needing to Flore, Northants, after taking the valve body out and fit it to their spare which will be installed into the car at the track. Team mate and brother Dan is preparaing for the forthcoming Sweden International at Tierp following a strong showing at the EDRS meeting there earlier in May when Dan was runner up. The team are now distributors for Joe Gibbs Racing Oil and K&N filters and have plenty of stock here at Santa Pos.

Pro ET racer Steve Unsworth has moved up a class after the addtion of a Vortex supercharger and new engine tune by John Sleath. Following engine damage before Easter, Ron Haslett helped with a rebuild. Steve said "This was a five year plan that has happened three years too soon. As well as the engine work we have put a new roll cage in. We ran our first eleven at Easter. This year we will dabble in Pro ET but next year we want to do double duty with Sara in Sportsman ET." Steve believes the Mustang is the only manual transmission with clutch in the class.

Pro ET racer Amanda Cox ran a new PB of 9.32 in testing. She said "We changed the rear end gearing to a lower ratio of 4.29 to allow the car to pull higher revs at the finish line. The engine is the same as last year with the exception of a Jeff Bull high rev launch chip and we have more tuning planned. But this is only our second big meeting and I was really pleased to improve my PB by half a second."

Pro ET racer Sarah Howells ran a perfect light and was magnanimous in allowing it to be reinstated, thanks guys. Team Ramraider which owns the dragster between four individuals, has the car for sale in order to build something "bigger, longer and faster." She said "The car is in its sixth season with over 400 passes on it and was built by us to a high quality. We run it by only needing to refresh the engine at the end of eaach season." Meanwhile a deposit has been put down for a new 510 methanol injected Big Block Chevy for a late 2013 or 2014 debut.

Pro ET racer John Morris imported this 80s Mustang from California a couple of years ago "to keep my hand in". The old Animal Magic Probe was dismantled and sold for parts. John said "The car runs 11.3s but there is more potential. The engine is a 351 Windsor pushing out 400hp with a single carb and C4 auto gearbox and the interior has been lightened although the car is still road legal. "I hope to run a ten soon after some tyre and convertor work. But it's great to be back for the first meeting after four years away working on my new farm."

Pro ET racer Dave Russell is also returning in the Van With No Name after building a new engine and taking a couple of years out.

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator racer Colin Lazenby, pictured with wife Anne-Marie, is back after taking 2011 off. Colin said "I did two runs yesterday, the first one with a gentle tune and new tyres, Hoosier block treads. It blew the tyres off, then on the second pass with more power taken out it did the same. It is not uncommon on new tyres to take three to five runs with reduced power before the tyres come good. This is nearly the same setup as when I last ran the car at the 2010 Euro Finals. The plan for this season is to see how the funding goes and do an event or two more."

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator racer Mats Andersson, pictured left with crewman Alan Williamson, said after session 1, "Up until now I have had the frustration of a cold or damp track. I have a new engine and I have gone three tenths faster than my previous PB already." The car has a straight six Toyota Supra engine with turbo and nitrous and engine management by Syvecs, a company that has an established presence in circuit racing and now developing engine software specifically for drag racing with Mats, Stuart Williams and Steve "Splinter" Nash. Mats said "They estimate power of 900hp which means the car should run 8.7-8.8s times." Alan is crewing with Mats as Chris Isaacs is currently constructing him a new SFI 25.2 chrome moly chassis for his white truck, ready for a debut next year.

Super Pro ET racer Chris Hartnell is celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II by putting up Union Jack bunting in his pit, wife and Wild Bunch co-ordinator Clare wearing Union Jack leggings and running a new PB of 8.72. However on the car's final pass a rod broke bringing a halt to racing activities for the weekend.

Super Pro ET racer Roy Walker has stepped up a class by installing a normally-aspirated 540cu in John Sleath-built Big Block ehgine in his Vauxhall. He said "The car launches straight and I am really breaking in the engine before John comes to the Performance Vauxhall Show and retunes it to run mid to low eights."

Super Pro ET racer Ian Turburville was pushed back in the first session with a minor leak, and didn't make the startline in the second and third sessions. It later transpired that engine damage had occurred, a pity for the team after their problems last year.

Super Pro ET racer Wouter van Leersum is running a supercharged California-built '68 Camaro looking just like a Pro Mod and running in the sevens in qualifying. Sounds like a plan... The car has a 541cu in engine, 14-71 blower, and former Super Gas racer Wouter is crewed by brother Anthony and Bass Zwaartman. For more details see here.

Super Pro ET racer Thomas Stiefel from Switzerland is here in his Andy Robinson built 420cu in blown 55 Chevy. He has the car running in the 6.9s range at over 200mph.

Super Pro ET racer Reinier Van Scheldt has a 37 Chevrolet pick up built in Texas and powered by a 672 ci Dart with 10-71 blower and twin carbs. The car runs in the 8.6 range in Super Pro and also competes in Super Comp where team member Jeremy Prince drives it. You can see more on Reinier's repair company X-Pair here.

Super Comp racer Noah Stutz is again racing under the Erbacher team banner as Noah's father Rito is a sponsor of Urs through his company SCS IT. Noah's car was built by John Parkes of Chrome-Worx based in Michigan, USA.

Super Comp racer Frank Eijskoot runs this unusual-for-drag-racing Pontiac Fiero, a mid-engined sports car built between 1984 and 1988. Frank won the Street Machine Dutch championship in 1995 with a '57 Bel Air and followed this up with a '62 Nova with which he won the Dutch 2000 Super Street championship. He sold the Nova in 2002 and took a long break until 2010 when he built the Fiero with the help of Chasis Engineering in Riviera Beach, Florida. With a front mounted 427ci Chevy engine, the car has been in the 10.3-10.4s range so far.

Latest update: 17:30

Pro Mod racer Bert-Ove Olofsson, pictured left, is supported this week by Jim Salemi of G-Force Racecars, who has built cars for at least three European teams as well as teams in the Middle East and Australia. He said "I specialise in building supercharged doorslammers, mainly for Outlaw series such as the PMRA in which around 10 of 16 cars were built by G-Force. Since the IHRA stopped running Pro Mod the scene has fragmented and includes cars with screw blowers as well as roots blowers with unlimited overdrive." Jim joins forces with brother John of Resolution Racing Services and Mike Stawicki of MSR Performance to run a Pro Mod car that went as quick as 5.73/256 with a screw blower. Bert-Ove was helped to run his best of 5.97 at Tierp recently and was on a good run yesterday when an airline came out of its fitting to second ger, resulting in the engine revving freely, but without damage.

Top Methanol Dragster racer Manty Baguela's car owner Joe Carabott was delighted with a 5.48/256 test pass. He said "We just planned a launch but it was so good I made a full pass", he said. "The car is the same basic setup as last year although we have had great help from Norm Grimes in tuning the car and advising us. The setup was soft and it was easy to handle going down the track. We are looking forward to running all the FIA races and our aim is the championship. We have a complete spare engine and feel ready." We expect Norm Grimes will be a factor in this as he helped NHRA racer Rick Santos to five consecutive TAD championships in 1997-2001 and is currently enjoying success with Jim Whiteley in the US.

Pro Mod racer Robert Joosten made a lot of changes over the winter to his G-Force Racecars-built Camaro and said "It is like a new car. I ran the Thursday Pro test but the two step did not work and the car moved forward and rolled through. In the Friday Pro Test session the car was not lined up, again it rolled the beams but it was my best leave ever and still a 1.03 to 60ft. It would have been under a second with a proper launch. Then the car got out of the groove and I couldn't get it back before I hit the reflector." Robert is advised this weekend by former IHRA Pro Stock team owner Charlie Taylor who supports Joshua Hernandezin ADRL racing, and asked us to pass on to Charlie's wife Jane the team's best wishes and a message that Charlie is keeping in the dry.

Pro Mod racer Marcus Hilt is hoping the changes made over the winter will prevent the loss of performance he suffered at all his events last year. "There was an oil flow problem and the engine spun the main bearing twice. We have a new crank, the block has been fixed and oil system changed and we now have K&N oil System One filters. In addition the car has been wrapped and pinstripe flames painted on. Marcus will be joined by US doorslammer legend Camp Stanley when his schedule allows. In the meantime the team are backing the car down to prevent the tyre spinning that plagued it down the track in eight out of ten runs last year. The programme comprises both events at SPR and Hockenheim and transportation is courtesy of Noah Stutz's team.

Pro Mod racer Roger Moore's crew chief and brother Dave Moore was disappointed with the car's launch. He said "The car is double launching with the revs plummeting to 1800 from 4800 on the chip. With all the nitrous we were lucky there hasn't been a nitrous burp. We discovered a voltage drop and replaced the battery but after a good run, the problem reappeared. We tested the first stage of nitrous as well and found no problem. So we have had to take clutch out which hurts the 60ft. We may try purging the nitrous later or twice to get more out. But we have so few runs available to us we can't afford to make one change at a time. We know the car is capable of consistent 6.5s."

Pro Mod racer Wayne Nicholson is another racer frustrated by weather conditions this year. He said "We know all the ingredients are there with the car's tuning, the crew's support and the track, but although we've got the power, getting track time is a problem. At this event last year we managed to qualify tenth ahead of teams with far bigger budgets than ours. We will be racing at Hockenheim this year to give us more runs and look forward to going quicker and quicker."

Pro Mod racer Marc Meihuizen's ARRC-built Firebird is showing MPM Oil colours this year. He said "We feel well prepared for the year. We have refreshed the engine and have made only small changes to develop it. The team has remained consistent and if it goes well it will go fast. In yesterday's test session there was a minor fuel leak from the breathing system on the tank and the vapour condensed on the bodyshell which created a leak so we were shut down. Then we had some start line co-ordination issues so we weren't able to record a time. We feel we can run a 6.0 here and the car launched well and just lost traction down the track. We have to run a five at Tierp. We don't buy lots of new stuff, we invest, for instance our Alan Johnson heads are five years old."

Super Pro ET racer and Eurodragster.com blogger Rob Elsom is pleased with his new car but knows there is much to learn in moving up from Pro ET to quick doorslammers. "We still have to turn the single stage of nitrous on. The car handles really sweet and is a really good machine. Thanks to Abbey Motorsport for help with the data retrieval from our data recorder. We are here for testing and the biggest challenge is getting seat time and practising shifting the four speed Lenco."

Eurodragster.com sponsor MPM Oil has a large stand on the pit side next to where its four main sponsored cars of Gordon Smith, Jason Phelps, Marc Meihuizen and David Vegter are pitted. Stay tuned for a Eurodragster.com competition to win MPM-related and Marshall product kindly donated by Richard Stevens, MPM's UK MD.

Top Fuel racer Chris Andrews is planning to make a launch to get data to 60ft for tuning the car. He said "We had some issues with the fuel system but think we have these under control. We will try to get further down the track on each run as I still have to do a familiarisation pass." The sole UK team in the FIA Top Fuel championship this year, you can find out more about the background to the Lucas Oil-sponsored Forbes & Andrews team at Club Speedgroup.

Supertwin racer Chris "Cannon" Hannam had an impressive flame show out of his header yesterday evening - however this was due to engine damaage. He said "The front cylinder head cam bucket seized in the head resulting in excess fuel being pumped into the back cylinder which caused damage to the rear head and pistons. SO we stripped the engine down completely and worked until 3:30am rebuilding it. But when we started it this morning it still didn't sound right so we have stripped it again. It is easier fitting new parts than an entire new engine which could take all day."

Pro Stock Bike racer and Eurodragster.com blogger Kalle Lyren ran an excellent 7.193 on the Veidec machine but was not as happy as he could have been as the run was made only with five gears. "I later ran but had the same problem and ran a 7.24. We looked at it overnight and hopefully have it sorted."

Pro Stock Bike racer Martin Bishop ran a 7.419/179.96 and was pleased. He said "This is my PB for Santa Pod and did it off the trailer. We have made engine mods in the valve train and internal parts which are lighter and well balanced. There is a lot of carbon fibre and titanium in the bike now. Even with soft settings and changing gear at 12000rpm it ran 1.16 to 60ft and was fast at the top. There is loads more to come. We will be running all the championship." Martin's team is crew chief Timon Marshall and new clutch man Cliff Gould who comes in for the now-retired Baz Rathbone.

Supertwin racer Nate Gagnon is over from Canada again this season but on his own superbly-engineered bike. He said "I built the bike over the winter of 2010-11. I really enjoyed racing in Europe with all the friendship and camaraderie, although there was some mechanical carnage and I was riding for someone else. Now I am riding in a two bike team with Samu Kemppainen who I sold my previous bike to and we are both running Nitro V60 engines supplied by 13-time championship winning Ron Houniet's Fastlane Racing. My best time is 6.40 and speed 238 so it was great to run a 6.57 yesterday with soft settings."

Top Fuel Bike racer Steve Woollatt was happy with an early shut-off 6.78/155 checkout pass in the Pro Testing session. He said "We are in the lap of the weather. This is the first event this year that we have had the chance of making a full pass, with Easter being curtailed. We need more chances, so I am planning to run at Hockenheim again this year."

Super Street Bike racer Thomas Granica, pictured left with brother Peter, said "We are used to the weather being unpredictable at this event and it is the same for all. I was helping Peter sort his new bike on Thursday so my pass was the first on a prepped track with the new intercoolers. They help give more power at lower boost settings which should mean better reliability and consistency. But the old boost controller settings are no longer valid so we will have to build a new tuning curve. The goal was to de-stress the engine and expect the power output to be at least 400hp." Thomas is running the UEM Super Street Bike series with two rounds at SPR as well as Hockenheim and Kunmadaras.

Super Street Bike racer Steve Venables ran a remarkable string of 7.24, 7.22 and 7.34 in a fraction over two hours in the test session yesterday. He said "I'm pleased but the tyre was still spinning down the track. I think we've found a good setting. We have changed a few things including the way it shifts gear with the boost solenoid and they improved the peformance. The whole bike is now 2.5 inches further forward - the DME Racing.com chassis is the same but the swing arm, subframe and new forks place me further forward. Big CC have helped me with the engine and I have a special Owens Development turbo. I will be at the UEM round at Hockenheim but not Hungary as my contruction business is keeping me busy." You can follow Ven Racing on their Facebook page.

Super Pro ET racer Andy Raw is a welcome returnee after recovering from injuries sustained in an accident on the way to last August's NitrOlymp'x. The VW Funny Car is running mid-eights with the help of Karl Harrison. Karl said "I am involved closely with Andy as crew chief and we also store and prepare the car for him. Andy's engine was built by my friend Mark Pacey and Andy helps at the weekend." Karl is also working on Steve Taylor's dragster which will be returning to the track soon with new engine parts. Meanwhile Karl has a new Firebird body (ex-Shockwave) for his alky funny car which his girlfriend Natasha is planned to race when it is back at the track.

Already widely known as the Queen of Race Control, Assistant Race Director Carole Ismail now commands even more respect as she has gained her MSA National A licence and thus qualified as a Race Director. Carole is already qualified as a UEM International Race Director and should be an MSA/FIA International Race Director by the end of this season. Carole is currently the only female Race Director UK in drag racing.

Pro Stock racer Jimmy Alund has a new 2012 Camaro built by renowned uS Pro Stock constructor Jerry Haas with a Bob Ingles engine under the hood. Jimmy tested the car at the NHRA Summernationals at Heartland Park, Topeka where he ran a 6.757/204.32 in the new car which is sponsored by KW Parts.com. With a new combination, the car has struggled to launch so far. After packing up early and leaving Jimmy said "I have broken one engine and damaged another - I don't have the budget to afford any more damage." Jimmy cited issues with the track.

Latest update: 13:15

Top Methanol Funny Car racer Rob Turner ran a 6.33 in the first session and did not record a time in the second after Danny Bellio crossed the centreline. Rob said "We were a bit apprehensive in the first session after shutting off on the line as the motor had run for some time and the clutch was out from the first burnout. So we got in a run and it went ok for the first two seconds and then I short shifted and lifted. Up to that point it looked like a 5.80." Rob is helped by some new crew members as well as crew chief Steve and wife and team manager Carmel.

Top Methanol Dragster racer Chris Polidano was delighted to run a 5.400/266 in the first session, his personal best by almost three tenths. He said "Now we want thirties. I am really happy with the car and it drives great." in the second session Chris shut off. The team have new attire for the 2012 FIA season.

Top Methanol dragster racer Monty Bugeja was happy with a 5.35/265 in session one and subsequent 5.37/257, albeit with an engine explosion. Team member Charlie Draper said "The crew have worked very hard and Norm Grimes' expertise has been a real boost and I have learned a lot from him. It's as if he supplied the hand grenade and trained the monkey to hold it. In working with Norm I tried to empty my head of all previous knowledge - it didn't take long."

Top Methanol dragster racer Timo Habermann said the teams' cars had been refreshed over the winter with small changes to make them as identical as possible. The team have a new rig for the tour. On the first pass he could only manage 5.89 and said "The engine was too cold which hurt the performance but there was no damage. So we made just basic checks between runs." The car improved to 5.43 in the second session to qualify no.5.

Top Methanol dragster racer Dennis Habermann in his silver coloured machine is with crew members Dennis and Yasin before the second session yesterday. Dennis ran 5.37/250 in session one and 5.46/259 in session two for third in qualifying.

Pro Mod racer Steve Hall is getting the black Corvette down the track better this event and achieved his first six second pass to his delight, 6.89/208. He said "On the previous run it jumped out of gear in the burnout and didn't shift properly from first to second and then it shook. We have a new four link setting and have changed first gear ratio to calm it down, but it's a lot of changes at once." Steve said the car is for sale as a rolling chassis as the team are building a new one.

Top Fuel Dragster racer Risto Poutiainen's car is being warmed in the pits. Crew member Leon Bienek said the team were confident and the car shook only a little in the first session to record a 4.17/267 for no.1. In the second session Risto stepped up after a strong showing from Stig Neergaard and improved to a 4.10/293 for no.1. A video of the run is at Facebook.

Top Fuel Dragster racer Paul Ingar Udtian suffered a fuel leak in his first attempt to complete licencing. "The pipe broke and fuel got under the rear tyres. Yesterday it was a broken oil line. We think they may have been hurt in the explosions to two of our motors last Saturday. The team had to weld and machine blocks during the week, thanks to the facilities at Armour Fabrications and Tony Pearson's workshop." Paul Ingar is pictured with wife Mona and daughters Maja and Mari.

Top Fuel Dragster racer Jari Halinen suffered a broken blower belt 100ft down the track in the first session although the car responded well to 60ft with a 0.89 and then tyre smoke set in. Jari said "The team including 'Doctor' Laurie Bamford are very quick to service the car. I am happy running 1000ft as long as we are all doing it."

Top Fuel Dragster racer Stig Neergaard has a new self-constructed chassis from Murf McKinney designs. His engines are also new Alan Johnson items with up to date Stage 6 heads and billet blower. A planned launch was followed by a 4.11/289 to make Risto raise his game. Stig said "The plan is not to burn it up but to start steadily and step up bit by bit. The car left 100% good on the launch and a 0.9 60ft was conservative. John Smith will join us on Sunday as he has been working on his funny car in the US."

Top Fuel Dragster racer Duncan Micallef completed his licensing with a strong 4.2235/283.06 in the repainted Telephone Box-sponsored car, with the car on the throttle to the quarter mile. He said "Yes, I lifted late as I thought the course went on a bit longer than it did. I was comfortable with the car and worked on getting a good reaction and it was a 0.10. The engine is in good shape and I congratulate Rune and the team for preparing the car. The Finnish crew are fantastic and I just cannot believe the numbers I am running."

Top Fuel Dragster racer Micke Kagered said "It should be an exciting year in Top Fuel. The field will be bigger later in the season with a couple more teams and when the new guys figure it out they should run very strong." Micke ran a pair of shake-plagued passes to be no.6 in the ladder. Looking to weather conditions he said "Tomorrow, we will need a Swedish diving suit."

Supertwin racer Christian Jäger said "We are not extremely fast yet but on the right lines. The team worked very hard over winter to check everything and change parts in the engine and transmission. The transmission is a new type of Bentec. We are happy now, the end of the last season was bad for us with breakage and we have taken the time to understand the bike and how it works more. Now we want to learn from our performance and keeping it straight." The first pass was an early lifting 6.91/175.

Top Fuel Bike racer Ian King said "We are working on the suspension geometry with the wheelie bar and tyre to get it to hook up. Getting the power transferred after the launch from 60ft onwards is a problem; it is spinning and skating around down the track." Despite the traction issues, the Gulf Oil sponsored bike carded a 6.41 to qualify first.

Top Fuel Bike racer Otto Knebl said "We are working on the clutch setup and reassembled the engine several times over the winter. We can't run the bike all out at local Czech tracks as they are not prepped fully so need to do plenty of runs at Santa Pod which for this bike is our home track! The bike is not running straight enough and we are working on the clutch setup to resolve that. We will be running Hockenheim and the August Tierp round as well as the Finals." Thanks to Ales Duchac for interpretation.

Supertwin racers Jan Sturla Hegre and Svein Olav Rolfstad have only one bike on the team this weekend as Svein Olav suffered a broken crank and rods in Tierp. He said "We are crossing our fingers that Per Bengtsson will have replacements ready in time for the Sweden International. in the first session, Jan Sturla lifted very quickly after a 1.08 60ft time. He said "It felt as if it was going too lean and we found the front cylinder had gone lean as a piece of rubber got in the injector nozzle. We found the front spark plug had started to heat up but there was no other apparent damage although we didn't have time to disassemble the engine. It is only running 73% nitro so there is plenty of power in reserve in our Overkill engine."

Pro Stock Bike racer Ulf Ögge ended second in qualifying although he only was able to run a 7.42 on the Buell. He said "The track is too cold for quick times so we are hoping for warmer conditions later." Two-time UEM champion Ulf attended the NHRA Gatornationals in March and qualified with a best of 7.034/187.

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator racer and Eurodragster.com sponsor Jon Webster has a newly constructed Mercury Comet with the turbocharged small block Ford powertrain from his MG SV. The front end of the car is carbon fibre. Alex McIntosh is crewing for Jon this weekend and in its first event the car ran 8.74/155.

Latest update: 20:40

This weekend is the tenth anniversary of the first 300mph pass in FIA Top Fuel in Europe. On 2nd June 2002 Barry Sheavills lined up against Andy Carter in qualifying and Barry reached the finish line first at 304.71mph in 4.970 seconds. A whisker later Andy crossed at 303.07 in 4.897 seconds. Barry is pictured holding a copy of the historic timing ticket.

Top Fuel Dragster racer Risto Poutiainen, who like Barry, races a Rune Fjeld-owned and tuned car, is riding high at this event. He qualified no.1, pipping Stig Neergaard by 0.01s in the process. He said "The track and air are good and think we will run quicker today. We could run 300mph to 1000ft which the data said we should have done earlier, but for a broken blower belt. The next round is against team-mate Jari Halinen but there will be no foul play!" Risto said the chassis and engine are updated for the latest parts. Sponsorship comes from Multi-lotto.com, a site that enables you to enter lotteries around the world. Risto won his first FIA event after Stig Neergaard didn't make the call following earlier damage.

Top Fuel Dragster racer Stig Neergaard is joined by US racer John Smith who spent Friday and Saturday tuning Mike Smith in the family's funny car to 14th place at the time and then hopping on a plane at 6:30pm which landed in London at 9am. He said "With the rain I could take my time getting to the track and Stig has a great handle on his car, he just bounces stuff off me." Stig said "We are running the same combination as the earlier passes which works well and are only making marginal changes. It is a safe combination." That said, damage in the semi final prevented a final round appearance against Risto.

Top Fuel racer Chris Andrews shut off at 300ft against Stig's 4.15 run but it was planned. He said "We are still testing the systems. I know the car reacts well and my reaction time was 0.026. We are preparing for the whole season and have two additional spare motors and a lot of parts on the way. The way the car and team performed is bang on the money." Chris is sponsored by Lucas Oil who through Morgan Lucas had a previous ownership interest in the car.

Top Fuel racer Anita M&aumllkelä had a blower belt broke at 300ft. She said "We don't yet know the reason why it broke but when it did, there was total silence. The young guys in the class are doing fine and have the right attitude. At the next event there will be three more cars and it will be even more difficult so it was a pity to lose in round one here." Anita said that winter work was confined to maintenance of the car and mandatory updates. She is pictured with son Heikki who is helping on fuel and various areas around the car.

Top Methanol dragster racer Chris Polidiano was delighted to run his first 5.3 at 264mph in the Gold RV sponsored car, but was nipped at the end by Timo Habermann in the closest race of the day by 0.0032s or 14 inches. Chris said "It was my first proper TMD race. I will have to practice reaction times and we are looking forward to running at Tierp with all the team."

Top Methanol dragster racer Esko Raisvuo had a frustrating event. He said "We're going nowhere. On the earlier runs the fuel system was spraying and on this one it was too lean," after a first round defeat to Dave Wilson.

Pro Mod racer Roger Moore explained that the reason for the car dying on the start line was Roger reacting to Andy Wright leaving in the other lane by dropping the clutch before the ehgine had gone up on the chip. "I purge the nitrous in pre-stage," explained Roger, "So I just left when I saw Andy go, but it was too early." In the second round, Roger left on time against Bert-Ove Olofsson but was overpowered by the latter's Impala.

Pro Mod racer Bruno Bader has had problems getting down the track. He said "I haven't managed to find the setup and lost traction on every pass. On my last run the tyre slippage through the finish line was 25% of actual speed. All I can do is to try to stay in front and hope the track gets better later in the day." In round two Bruno's improved 6.59 was against Robert Joosten's red light and we understand that rather than pedalling, the slow time was due to a failing ignition box.

Top Methanol Dragster racer Dave Wilson said "Against Esko we were apprehensive about the traction and put a tune up in it to get down the road. The result was a 5.45 which probably won't be enough for Dennis Habermann in the next round, so we will have to do something to make it quicker."

Top Methanol Dragster racer Krister Johansson's 5.44/264 was defeated by Dennis Habermann's 5.35/263. Krister said "We did improve but not enough to defeat Dennis who cut a better light and ran quicker. But 264mph is our second best speed. Crewman Glenn Read said "We have checked the car and rebuilt it using some fresh engine parts since our last race at Hockenheim and had the block repaired. We are still running 97% nitro in the EU and hope that will remain for the sake of equality. Our cars are less predictable than the alcohol ones and we need at least a chance to win."

Pro Mod racer and Eurodragster.com sponsor Graham Ellis ran a quick speed of 242mph to defeat Eurodragster.com blogger Andy Frost in the rerun first round race. He said "In the first attempt the transmission exploded as the car was winding down and we had to put in a new clutch. This time we have normal service and don't have to do so much. Against David Vegter he will be trying to win and we will still be happy if he puts us in the left hand lane. The car has boost controller issue which means it doesn't make as much boost at any point as previously, although whether the track could handle the additional boost is doubtful. We will check it out later." Graham went through to the semi-final by virtue of David crossing the centre line.

Top Fuel Bike racer Rene van den Berg was defeated by Rikard Gustavsson. Rene said "I was nervous running Rickard and the burnout didn't feel good and then I got tyre shake on the run. The team are missing the next UEM round to prepare Rene's new bike for a debut at the SPRC Summernationals.

Top Fuel Bike racer Rickard Gustavsson is pleased to be racing against the nitro bikes on his quick Funny Bike. He said after a 6.56 in round one "I hope to go quicker. A 6.3 should be possible but not here. I have Nils Lagerlof in the semi final round and will run the same setup, but will need to step up for the final against Ian King.

Top Fuel Bike racer Nils Lagerlof is at his first meeting in the class and made a promising start by defeating an up-in-smoke Steve Woollatt. He said "I made a good start and then drifted to the left and managed to get the win. The 1.09 60ft time was good. I am looking forward to running the series and have run a best of 6.74." Nils said his setup is based on a Hayabusa engine with turbo on methanol. The bike has an Ultronic SM4 engine management system. You can read Nils' blog on www.ncracing.com

Supertwin racer Samu Kemppainen suffered a belt breaking into many pieces in his first round victory against Chris Hannam. He said "There were pieces of belt all over the bike but fortunately no damage. Both Nate and I are tuning our own bikes but we share knowledge a little and have the same Ron Houliet engines and our own spare parts." Samu said Ron is tuned into the coverage from Canada and is advising the teams remotely.

US tuner Norm Grimes who took Rick Santos to five consecutive NHRA championships is here advising Manty Bugeja's TMD operation to new bests of 5.292/259. Norm said "I met Manty through Rick as he bought a car ran by Rick and asked him when he was looking for help with getting an engine. It's my first time in Europe and I have enjoyed it greatly with the friendly people, lots of meals and the rain, although it seems to rain whereever I go. Top Methanol Dragster in Europe is tougher than I expected. The grass is always greener on the other side, but there are definitely no easy pickings here. The circumstances are different and challenging. Whilst my schedule with Jim Whiteley won't allow me to visit Europe later in the year I can't express how much fun it has been to meet the people and observe the scene over here. And the Mr Whippy team are great workers, they never give up."

Super Pro ET racer Martyn Jones' crew chief Crunch was relaxing in the driver's seat. Meanwhile Sid was ruminating on having to do a footbrake launch for the first time in 22 years. "The transbrake blew and when I looked for the spare I found that one had been destroyed too. The engine is revving more than we were hoping as the convertor is slipping. I am trying to get off the rev limiter. On Friday it was on the limiter from 1000ft to the finish and on Saturday for the last 0.3s. We will get a taller rear end ratio and I hope to run a five at some stage soon."

Pro Stock racer Conrad Stanley is facing Thomas Lindströ in the first round. He said "We have been trying different clutch settings on every run and think we are going in the right direction. We have engine issues in qualifying and it dropped a cylinder off the startline. We will hopefully have a close race with Thomas." Conrad mentioned he is awaiting confirmation of funding for attending Tierp in two weeks' time, but all arrangements are in place.

Pro Stock racer Micke Callin is sponsored by Siölunds Transport AB who are in attendance. Micke said "I am pleased they are in attendance as the owner's brother sponsors Jimmy Alund." Jimmy had to withdraw with significant engine damage whereas Micke got down the track three times. "I was pleased to do that as we only managed two full passes at the Finals. The car and crew are working fine. We haven't changed much on the car and are just trying to go fast and smooth."

Pro Stock racer Thomas Lindström qualified second after a best of 6.73, a hundredth behind Micke Callin. He said "Now we have some good settings we don't want to go outside the box and drive safely. We had no damage to the engine even though it overrevved on the left lane over the bumps in the middle and the revs went up by 1000. Conrad may have less power than us but his car can go down the track and it's not over until the fat lady sings. We think the best lane for us is the right." In the race a 6.659 was close to the ET record and the first half of a new speed record. Thomas is well-equipped for the season with a brand new Alan Johnson Dodge Hemi engine.

Top Methanol Funny Car racer Rob Turner said that after Steph Milam's withdrawal due to an injury sustained on an off-and-on the throttle run in the right lane, there will be two bye passes and then the final will be Rob and Danny Bellio. "We will go for it on the bye run and hope to get lane choice." Turner Motorsport have the Borg brothers crewing again; Paul (pictured far right) and Mario (second from left) have been in touch with the Turners over the last three years. Paul said "We bought a car from the late Bernie Hepworth in 1993 and then imported a dragster with a Small Block Chevy from the US."

Top Methanol Funny Car racer Danny Bellio was frustrated that conditions are preventing the car from performing to its potential. He said "It's not a good feeling. I feathered the throttle from 400ft and the car still ran a 5.82; the right lane is better than the left for us but in either it skates around after half track. The traction at the start is excellent but there are problems down the track. As a result of over-revving we have had to change both top bearings and bottom bearings on the rods which is unusual."

Pro Mod racer and no.1 qualifier David Vegter who is sponsored by Eurodragster.com sponsor MPM Oil has invested the additional funds in a new Brad Anderson engine with Stage 6 heads, Waterman Fuel Pump and PSI 14-71 roots blower. David said "If the car picks up we will go quicker. We want to be quick but consistent as well. The bye run produced low ET of the round of 6.23/209. Crewman Egbert Bros said "The conditions are tricky but we are fortunately starting where we finished last year and are using similar chassis settings. Other crew members are Dick Koster (crew chief), Gijs Visser (4-link and rear axle) and Nik Spijker (clutch and gears). The team will run the championship with the exception of Finland.

Pro Mod racers Roger Moore (pictured right) and Jean Dulamon are the two nitrous runners in the thirteen car ladder. Roger said "The car shook the tyres on the first run and broke the wheelie bars. That put us behind, but we think we have sorted the ignition issue - the shake caused a lot of things to become loose."

Pro Mod racer Jean Dulamon's team was prepared and quick to act when a nitrous burp happened just as the car was coming up to the line. The restraint system, the strap of which can be seen above, prevents the concussion effect of carburretors leading to hood scoop flying into the air. Jean's scoop angled up allowing the quick-acting team to put a rag over the carbs to put out the small fire. We understand the restraint system has been developed by Roger Johansson. Jean did not qualify as he did not complete a pass.

Pro Mod racer Andy Wright (pictured right, with co-owner Bert Englefield) said "We are racing Roger Moore in the first round and I was pleased to run 6.60/218. We will keep it soft but try to apply more power at the top end and will choose the right lane. The car is fine but we needed two runs yesterday." The car has a new rear axle and injector hat for this season. In the race Andy left before the lights ran against a stalling Roger Moore.

Pro Mod racer and Eurodragster.com blogger Andy Frost was the victor against Graham Ellis but the race will need to be re-run following a problem with the guard beam. On the rerun, Andy ran a quickest and fastest street-legal pass of 6.59/220 in a losing effort

Pro Mod racer Kev Slyfield was catching Bruno Bader after he hit shake but then crossed lanes in the second half. Earlier Kev said "The convertor broke on Saturday so we had an emergency dash home and fitted the repaired item on Saturday night. We are happy with the repair and think it will run better than ever. The start is so important; it unsettles the car if there isn't a decent launch and the run becomes difficult."

Pro Mod racer Bert-Ove Olofsson said "We think we have figured out the track and had to lift once on our 6.33 in the second session. We would like to run the championship but will see how we go. Thanks to the team for their support." On the bye run after Wayne Nicholson failed to start, the unique Impala launched hard but got out of the groove with shake. Then a broken lifter on the warmup for the semi-final put paid to any further round wins at this event.

Pro Mod racer Marc Meihuizen was optimistic before the race. He said "We will try our best to see what the track can take and will try to do what's possible." However Marc fell prey to the rain delay and was shut down with the oil cap fallen off, having done his burnout previously.

Supertwin racer Job Heezen suffered an engine explosion in the cylinder head that spoilt a run which the team said was a ptential 6.4. He said "We had to replace the head but the valves were ok. We think we have a speed advantage over Christian Jäger and prefer the right lane. At speed both are the same for us but the left is bumpier for us."

Pro Stock bike racer Elvira Karlsson said "I am comfortable riding the bike and am looking forward to elminations." Elvira qualified sixth with a 7.57. Team manager Roger Lyrén said "Elvira is in a learning process and whilst she has many steps to take I am not putting Elvira under too much pressure. She is running a 1500cc engine here and we will give her the 1755cc engine later in the season. We have had many riders on the team and the relationship differs with each. If they have been racing for many years we have to try to get them to unlearn their habits and be open minded enough to accept our strategy and be willing to learn."

Pro Stock bike racer Fredrik Fredlund said "We are struggling a lot. I broke a gearbox in the test session and had to take the engine out to replace it. Then I rolled backwards into the water in the first qualifier so only did one qualifier, a 7.50 for fourth place. We have a new Racepak computer which doesn't work so we have no data. Also our new longer first gear means that our previous tune-up settings don't work. The bike is lighter and we have the power to run a 7.0 or 6.9 but that is not possible here." After a lucky break when the bike wouldn't go into second against a red-lighting Len Paget, Fredrik came up fractionally short against Kalle Lyrén in the semi final.

As we passed, the nitro bikes were warming up outside their canopies. Pictured is Nate Gagnon's bike with Ian Turburville (out of shot) astride the front wheel and Samu Kemppainen looking on. Nate soloed for the win when Job Heezen broke rod bearings in the semi final.

Pro Mod racer and Eurodragster.com sponsor Graham Ellis was characteristically phlegmatic. He said "We just want to get to the other end without crashing and really don't know what the outcome would be against Andy Frost. Losing two qualifying runs and the test day has undoubtedly hurt us. We know the track well but can't take it too easy as Andy has the potential to get their first. We are not comfortable about the car in the current conditions and it is the first time I have been in it in competition - there is no comparison to driving it against when it had a supercharged engine, only the seat position, pedals and steering wheel are the same and the handling and controls are completely different with a turbo."
