Transmission Specialties - New as a contingency program partner  2012!
Transmission Specialties is one of the new companies that signed up for the 2012 contingency program on recommendation from one of their Scandinavian partners Stig O (read about Stig O in a separate article).  Speedgroup´s Åsa Kinnemar got in contact with Peter Miller, President of Transmission Specialties to find out more about the company!
Brief facts:
Transmission Specialties will be active in the EDRS European Drag Racinfg Series contingency program and work with the classes  Comp Eliminator, Stock Super Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Pro ET and Super Pro ET

SG: When was the company founded?

PM: Transmission Specialties was founded in 1979 as a small converter and transmission builder servicing the local tracks within a 150 km.

SG: How has the company developed since the start, what does the operation look like today?

PM: - Transmission Specialties has always been a leader in developing racing or torque converter products since it's inception.    In 1981, TSI developed the spragless racing converter and patented that technology. The spragless racing converter removes the sprag from the converter, thus eliminating the one part in the converter that continually fails, and allows the racing converter to be deadly consistent.  In the past 32 years, TSI has developed and marketed to the industry, the 1.80 straight cut gears, NASA ringless input shaft rated to 2500 HP, the matching PRO MOD pump and PRO MOD drum. On the converter side, TSI developed the 10.5" Caddie Northstar converter which was the fastest and quickest converter on the market for many years. TSI offers a full line of 10" lockup converter for the 4L60/4L80 transmissions that include a billet cover and oversized lock up plate for durability.

Transmission Specialties has evolved into a company marketing four  high performance market segments worldwide. These include finished transmissions, 2 speed and 3 speed, rated up to 2500 HP, manufacturer and sales of related transmission parts, finished racing and street/strip converters, and sales of all converter parts to produce the converters. TSI is now the largest supplier of high performance converter parts worldwide.

As the transmission cores are quickly  drying out, TSI is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars developing aftermarket PG and T-400 parts. These include an aftermarket PG case, valve body, pump, band and all the internal parts. The major challenge in the Industry is to develop these aftermarket parts at a reasonable cost and not price the racer out of the sport they love.

SG: This is Transmission Specialties first year in the Speedgroup Contingency Program for the EDRS European Drag Racing Series and sportsman racing - what can you tell the teams about your products? And to the teams that are not already customers, what can you tell to encourage them to consider Transmission Specialties as a supplier?

PM:   Any racer who has over 600 HP has had issues with a sprag in their racing converter., and often not known it. When a sprag slips, it is often after 2-3 runs, when heat is generated and a slipping sprag will cause inconsistent times, and you have no idea why. A sprag is used in street cars to keep the heat down and give better gas mileage, neither of which is necessary in drag racing, plus the sprag has nothing to do with stall speed. During a burn out or use of trans brake, the sprag often gets hurt  and your racing converter then become useless.

The TSI spragless racing converter was invented because trans brakes were blowing up sprags at an alarming rate back in 1980s. Even with today's stronger sprags, you will note that there is never a warranty offered on a sprag in a racing converter. With the use of blower, nitrous and turbos, having a sprag in your racing converter makes no sense.  A TSI spragless racing is fast and deadly consistent. They can be speced out on the TSI website and delivered  in anywhere in Europe with a week by FEDEX.
