SG: When was the company founded?
PM: Transmission Specialties was founded in 1979 as a small converter and transmission builder servicing the local tracks within a 150 km.
SG: How has the company developed since the start, what does the operation look like today?
PM: - Transmission Specialties has always been a leader in developing racing or torque converter products since it's inception. In 1981, TSI developed the spragless racing converter and patented that technology. The spragless racing converter removes the sprag from the converter, thus eliminating the one part in the converter that continually fails, and allows the racing converter to be deadly consistent. In the past 32 years, TSI has developed and marketed to the industry, the 1.80 straight cut gears, NASA ringless input shaft rated to 2500 HP, the matching PRO MOD pump and PRO MOD drum. On the converter side, TSI developed the 10.5" Caddie Northstar converter which was the fastest and quickest converter on the market for many years. TSI offers a full line of 10" lockup converter for the 4L60/4L80 transmissions that include a billet cover and oversized lock up plate for durability.

Transmission Specialties has evolved into a company marketing four high performance market segments worldwide. These include finished transmissions, 2 speed and 3 speed, rated up to 2500 HP, manufacturer and sales of related transmission parts, finished racing and street/strip converters, and sales of all converter parts to produce the converters. TSI is now the largest supplier of high performance converter parts worldwide.
As the transmission cores are quickly drying out, TSI is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars developing aftermarket PG and T-400 parts. These include an aftermarket PG case, valve body, pump, band and all the internal parts. The major challenge in the Industry is to develop these aftermarket parts at a reasonable cost and not price the racer out of the sport they love.
