Sportsman Class in the Spotlight:
Junior Dragster
Junior Dragster is a dragster built at "halfscale" of a top fuel dragster. The drivers can be between 8 - 18 years of age.
Junior Dragsters compete over the track distance 201 meters (1/8-mile).  There are two types: Junior Stock (J/S) where the driver is 8-18 år and the fuel used is trade gasoline and Junior Modified (J/M) open for drivers 12-18 years of age and run on methanol.

photo: Sebastian Breid, Emil Jungvar and Matilda Sjöström-Andersson are active in the Junior Dragster class. Great ambassadors for the sport and the class and during the Sweden Internationals at Tierp Arena Speedgroup also asked them to display and talk Junior drag racing with the crowd, which they and a few of the others did a great job with!

The Stock Dragsters can be run by youngsters from the age of 8. The engines are Briggs & Stratton’s of lawn mower type producing about 5 hp, they run the 201 meter track distance. as quick as 12.90 sec. which is the lowest ET allowed in this class and where the speeds are around 60 km.

The Modified  Junior Dragsters run on methanol and engines are custom race engines. The clutch is of the same type as used for snowmobiles. With speeds around 120-130 km/h and ET:s down to 7.90 sec. the “Modifieds” can even compare with some of the senior drag racing cars at a short distance.

The technique and know how in Europe have developed a lot during the last few years
and as a result many Modified Junior Dragsters perform in the region of the low ET allowed by the regulations (7.90 sec.)

Qualification in Junior Dragster is based on reaction times where a “perfect light” is 0.000 sec. Swedish Jr Dragster driver Hampus Staflund managed just that - to pull off a perfect light at the last race at Alastaro Finland. Well done!

As a result of constantly hunting the "perfect light", when the drivers grow too old for the Junior Dragsters and take the step into senior classes, they are often known for their good reaction times.

After a few years of falling numbers of participants in Junior Dragster, the 2011 season have shown growth in numbers and new teams entering the class. The points tables as of today show that 56 drivers have earned points in the national SDL Swedish Drag Racing League, while the international NDRS Drag Racing Series show 75 (!) drivers on the points lists and representing 5 nations . That will increase both in numbers and nations with the forthcoming event at HockenheimRing Germany. Both Series are administered by Speedgroup.

The “in between runs” maintenance of a Junior Dragster consists of checking the tire pressure, filling of fuel and every 3-4th run change of oil. Also important general checkups to see that all is in place, like that no bolts are loose or missing, general chassis check etc.

In between races service include cleaning of clutch and drive belt. The belt is also one of the most crucial components on the car. A change of belt during an event is not recommended as the bracket racing needs consistency a new belt may change the timing for the car to react.

Checkup of the carburetor and ignition are also recommended to do on a regular basis and after about 30 runs the engine is checked thoroughly incl bearings etc.

The favorite tracks for the drivers tend to depend on where they are located geographically. In Sweden as well major international arenas like Tierp and Mantorp as well as more local tracks like Borlänge and Västerås are appreciated.

The Junior Dragster Class sponsor is ME Racing Service - which is one of few licensed chassis builders in Europe for Top Fuel and Pro Mod. Owner Mats Eriksson and his family have conncetions with the class through son Ludvig and they feel deeply for the Junior Dragster class and the young drivers who are the future of drag racing and deserve to be supported and highlighted.

Another company that believe in the Junior Dragster class is AE Motor, the swedish distributer for Lucas Oil which have chosen to support the class via the contingency sponsorship program. The Lucas Oil special Junior Dragster Oil have also proven to work well for the teams.

Speedgroup will be happy to assist anyone who wish to get in contact with the Junior Dragster Association or have general questions about Junior Dragster Racing!
