On how to Select the Correct Racepak Data Logger

With the variety of data loggers available from Racepak, we are often asked the question, “Which data logger do I need, for my drag race vehicle”?
Nitro Methane or Methanol Funny Cars / Dragsters;
For nitro methane or blown methanol funny cars or dragsters, the selection is limited to our Pro series of data recorders. This is due to multiple reasons:

1. Tire shake conditions with a solid mounted suspension
2. Extreme cylinder pressure
3. Resistant to electronic noise
4. Advance cable connectors

The extreme operating environment of nitro methane or methanol fueled vehicles requires a data recorder that not only can survive in those conditions, but reliably record and download data, pass after pass. In addition, external sensors connected to the data logger must be able to withstand these same extreme conditions, producing accurate, clean data for each run.

While, the PRO I and PRO II data recorders have set the standard for pro level drag race data recorders, in 2011, Racepak released the PRO III data recorder. With increased memory, total sensor inputs and expandability, the PRO III will set the standard for nitro methane and methanol dragsters and funny cars, for years to come.

For all other drag racers, Racepak offers two data loggers, the V300SD and the Sportsman. There are two specific questions, which once answered, will define the correct data logger:

1. Does the vehicle utilize a supercharger and / or magneto?

a. If so, the V300SD must be utilized

2. The anticipated total number of external sensor inputs

a. If 8 or less EGT sensors and 6 or less of any other type of external sensors (pressure, temperature, air fuel, etc) will be installed, then the Sportsman is the correct choice

b. If more than 8 EGT and 6 external sensors will be installed, then the V300SD must be utilized

Tim Anderson, Racepak will be on site at Tierp Arena in june to assist the European teams during the race and hold educational seminars

Base Sensors
Both the Sportsman and V300SD data logger package includes the following:

1. Engine RPM input
2. Battery Voltage
3. Driveshaft RPM (includes driveshaft sensor, mount bracket and yoke collar with magnets)
4. Power / Ground / Engine RPM harness
5. Accel & Lateral G meters
6. SD memory card

Both the V300SD and Sportsman utilize the same V-Net sensors, UDX or IQ3 digital dash or Racepak Intelli-Gauges. Both data recorders can create multiple runfiles before downloading, with hours of total recorded data available through the use of an SD memory card.

So, for the customer, once the vehicle type and total anticipated external sensors are determined, the selection of the correct data recorder is an easy decision. Once the correct data recorder is selected, then the decision of “what sensors do I need for my vehicle” will be the next question…to be answered in a future column.

With a retail USD price of $1695.00 for the V300SD and $799.00 for the Sportsman, Racepak offers a suitable data logger package for a broad range of drag racing customers.

Racepak Onsite at Tierp Racepak will be onsite at the upcoming Tierp event in Sweden, June 9-12, with early arrival on June 8th. This will provide the opportunity to provide pre-race technical support and data logger installation services, if a data recorder is purchased at the event.
