Talking with the FIA champions
With some distance to the race season 2011 and looking ahead towards the winter months and in further on the championship 2012.. Read what the FIA champions Urs Erbacher, Fred Hanssen, Ulf Leanders, Michael Gullqvist and Jimmy Ålund have to tell!

FIA Top Methanol Dragster - Fred Hanssen

Will Hanna , tuner and crew chief for Fred Hanssen answers as Hanssen is busy working at sea for the time being

Now with the European Finals one month behind us, how do you feel about the season 2011? Any highlights or mishaps in particular you come to think about ?

The highlight would obviously be winning our first championship.  Aside from that, Tierp was also our first ‘real’ win.  We got the trophy in Hockenheim last year, but we didn’t get to really win it by winning the final round.  That was a big deal for us.  Finland was big because we battled back, got the win and the low e.t. points in the final.  The low point was Hockenheim.  When the bolt that the clutch linkage pivots on bent, it made the car try to roll through the beams and we lost first round.  Wilson went to another final.

Luckily we were in position at the Euro Finals that we just needed to take care of our business and win the race and we could win the championship.  We didn’t need to press or get outside of our program.  We went back to our bread and butter set up and the car responded.  The way qualifying panned out, we ended up No. 1 and Wilson was No. 5, so if we hung on to low e.t. points, we were tied and now the pressure was on Wilson.  I exercised our right to be last pair in first round as No. 1 qualifier.  That way I knew the situation going into our run.  Wilson smoked the tires, so we needed to win the round to clinch.  Nothing against our opponent Oliver Azzopardi, but I was willing to take my chances if we got to the finish line under power, we were going to take the win light.  So I went back and made some last minute adjustments to make sure nothing stupid happened.  It worked out better than I thought and ran a 5.40 again, clinching the championship.

We had to run our team mate Paul Ingar Udtian in the semi’s.  With the championship in the bag, and maybe a little on ‘tilt,’ I tried to rotate the earth off it’s axis a little and really hopped it up.  It shook pretty bad, but luckily for us, Paul was trying to do the same and smoked the tires.  In the final against Timo, I calmed it back down wanting to get the win.  A parachute came out early, but Timo had us beat anyway.

Other than that I am really happy with the progress Fred made as a driver and the progress the crew made this year.  Fred is really a machine in the cockpit, and that’s all you can ask for as a Crew Chief/Tuner.  This crew really rose to the occasion several times.  In Finland, we dropped a valve in the first round and we had the car back together with time to spare.  After we clinched the championship in the first round in Santa Pod, we broke a camshaft Torrington bearing spacer.  A really simple cheap part to fix, but it’s not something you fix between rounds.  We changed motors and I think after being the last pair to run down the track we were first or second car to warm up.  We broke a rocker arm in the semifinals and changed heads and rockers again with time to spare.  The fact that the car ran as good as it did, won the championship and never had any problems from something being left loose, etc., is a big testament to the fine job the crew did in maintaining the car.

What are you up to over the winter period?

Fred has been fishing almost non-stop since the Euro Finals.  He came in shore just long enough for NRK (Norwegian National TV) to do a feature spot on his championship, then it was back out to sea.

What can you can tell us about your plans for the 2012 season?

Stay tuned…

FIA Top Fuel Dragster - Urs Erbacher

We will get back with an article on Urs Erbacher in the next edition. If you meanwhile wish to read what he had to tell after the European Finals win in september please check out the winners interview in the edition #15

FIA Pro Modified  - Michael Gullqvist

Now with the European Finals one month behind us, how do you feel about the season 2011? Any highlights or mishaps in particular you come to think about ?

We ran our first event in march this year at the NHRA events in Gainesville and Las Vegas, leaving the US in 9th place in the NHRA championship.

Back in Europe we had a great season, running low ET at all the FIA events in 2011.  With exception of the European Finals, we ran consistent and fast at all events, which made up for the championship win in the end. One of the highlights was running the first 5 second run of the season at the new super track Tierp Arena in Sweden and one of the nightmares has to be my 0,6 second reaction time in the Alastaro final where our low ET of 5.98 was not enough to beat Mats Eriksson.

What are you up to over the winter period and is there anything you can tell us about 2012?

We don’t have any racing in the US planned right now as the racing season in Europe provide most of the excitement we need at the moment. I’m currently looking into what we need to change to stay competitive at the top level. There is some stuff we’re looking at testing, I’m always excited about trying new things and we’ll see if it makes sense. In 2012 we have six events in the FIA Championship and I think that’s a great improvement for the championship. I’m also excited that the Santa Pod track will be resurfaced and I’m sure that will lead to some record setting performance as the atmospheric conditions are always excellent when we race there in the spring or fall.

FIA Pro Stock  - Jimmy Ålund

Now with the European Finals one month behind us, how do you feel about the season 2011? Any highlights or mishaps in particular you come to think about ?

Overall  I´am very pleased with 2011, the competition was tougher than ever and to come out on top is pretty cool. Finland and Germany was our highlights this season, Alastaro because we made great runs and the driver did his job and we got the trophy. Hockenheim was fun because we had to work day and night the week before to rebuild the engine after a total disaster in testing at Tierp and to have top speed and low ET and be in the final after all hard work was really great.

What are you up to over the winter period?

AS always I will spend some time in US over the winter and hopefully there will be some Prostock parts that will follow me home.

What can you can tell us about your plans for the 2012 season?

Be faster, win every race and have fun……

FIA Top Methanol Funny Car  - Ulf Leanders

Now with the European Finals one month behind us, how do you feel about the season 2011? Any highlights or mishaps in particular you come to think about ?

Great to see and significant for the season was that we was no. 1 qualifier and set low ET on all events. But the faster we run, the more need to test out new setups. The overall problem for us as well as other teams are how to overcome and avoid tire shake. During the last tests we did at Tierp Arena at the beginning of October, we managed it weel, ran 5.61 sec and I am sure that if we had gotten one more run, it would have been in the 5.50´s.s Lindberg Bros also tested a Leanders Clutch ( a 4-disc 7" model ) and had it going when the testing came to an end. The clutch we have in our funny car is a one of a kind developed version of clutch (11" with 3 discs). Also Mats Eriksson in Pro Mod have been testing a clutch (9" 3 disc) at Tierp at the end of the season in Tierp.

What are you up to over the winter period?

At the moment we are preparing for the PRI show which take place in Orlando December 1-3rd. We are among the exhibitors there with Leanders Clutch to meet existing and hopefully potential customers. We aim to grow at the US market, we are aware it takes a long peridod of hard work to get to where we want. But very positive is that a few weeks back two of the teams that run our clutch brand, Allen Johnson and Vincent Nobile, was both in the Pro Stock Final.

What can you can tell us about your plans for the 2012 season?

We plan to run the full championship in 2012, we believe there are a few cars adding to the class, some of which has been parked in 2011 and some of which will run more than this season and I think the class will be really interesting and competitive in 2012
