10 teams on site in the Methanol
Dragster class at Hockenheim. Quickest in qualifications Dave Wilson at
5.373 sec followed by Timo Habermann 5.392 and Fred Hanssen 5.396. Tight
in the top as it usually is in this class!
Championship leader
Hanssen started well and looked confident, but in the first round of
eliminations he lost the race on the line to Dennis Habermann (Dennis
5.533 compared to Freds loosing 5.525). The reaction time made
all the difference this time and the race was over for
Hanssen.
Dave Wilson had a bit of luck in the quarter finals when
running against Derek Flynn. Wilson´s ET of 6.677 sec is not
what we are used to see from him and smoking the tyres is not either.
However in the other lane, Flynn too had problems and when
Wilson realised he still could win, he got on the throttle again and
passed the finish line first. After adjustments and in the semi
final Wilson was back in good shape and his 5.38 sec run took Schöfer
out from competition and earned him a place in the
final.
Unluckily Krister Johansson had to park the
car after the qualifications, engine damage put and end to further
competition. The plan was to drive the transporters to the UK after the
race but Krister decided to go back to Sweden and repair the
damage for the European finals. In Johansson´s absence Esko Raisvuo
took the place as 1st alternate but lost in the first round to Timo
Habermann.
On their home track the Habermann brothers, Dennis and
2010 champion Timo ran confident but one had to go when they faced
each other in the semi final. Timo´s car is the faster one and
although Dennis is known to be cobra quick at the startline, this
time Timo won that match too. Timo on to the final, which was
cancelled due to rain delays and the local curfew ending the racing at
18.00. Bad for Timo who if he had won the event would stand a better
chance of catching up in points to Hanssen and Wilson.
The team of Paul Ingar Udtian paid a tribute and
dedicated this race to his brother who passed away in june. Good to
see the team back in championship competition, although Schöfer proved to
be too quick to beat in the quarter finals and Udtian´s race weekend ended
earlier than could have hoped for.
The points standings after the NitrOlympx have now
switched from Hanssen being in the lead to Wilson´s favour. Last
years champion Timo Habermann have a remote chance to improve his 3rd
place, should Hanssen and Wilson fail to qualify at Santa Pod, UK when
the championship is to be wrapped up at the European Finals sept
9-11th.
