Pro Stock Review FHRA Nitro Nationals Alastaro Finland
Coming in to Finland, and his home race, Sampsa Palos leads the championship by 11 points from Jimmy Ålund with Michael Malmgren a further 25 points behind.

Jimmy Ålund liked the taste of sweet victory

The Alastaro event looks like having all the hallmarks of an interesting Pro Stock battle. Thomas Lindström will be looking for a repeat of his performance in Tierp, while Jan Palmqvist will want to put Tierp firmly behind him and qualify in Finland. With twelve cars and only eight places, it will be tight, but you could say it will be a big surprise if Jimmy Ålund, Michael Malmgren, Sampsa Palos and Richard Sundblom are not in the pairing lanes when eliminations begin, but that leaves the equally likely names of Tommy Leindahl, Micke Callin, Jan Palmqvist, Jonas Dantanus and Thomas Lindström as five cars chasing the other four places. Add to this that no-one should discount Conrad Stanley, Ulf Wagnhester and Bo Petterson, and you can see that Pro Stock will be a hotly contested event.

Some of the questions were answered by the end of Friday Q2. Jimmy Ålund closed out Friday as number one qualifier closely followed by Richard Sundblom and Thomas Lindström. The bump spot was sitting at 6.87 and Friday night’s outsiders were Michael Callin, Ulf Wagnhester, Bo Pettersson and Conrad Stanley.

Conrad Stanley’s Panther Racing Pontiac had a new engine this weekend. It looks as though the team were chasing set up through Friday.

Dave Alexander´s summary on site friday:

Pro Stock was without incident, nothing more than slight twitches of the back end as they got close to the edge of a narrow racing line. Jimmy Alund has the best ET and speed so far – 6.778/328.88. The field stretches back to abump spot of 6.945/321.22 for Michael Callin, with Ulf Wagnhester, Jan Palmqvist and Conrad Stanley currently heading for home on race day if they can't improve.

Saturday: The weather on Saturday was better than the forecast and the rain predicted for 5pm was prompt, interrupting the second session of qualifying before the FIA classes ran. Even when the rain stopped and the track was dry there was a long-lasting power cut that prevented any further qualifying.

Pro Stock opened proceedings and it was incident-free apart from Jonas Dantanus who launched hard, moved slightly left and then quickly pulled over to the side. He had to be pushed back  and small bits of metal were picked up from the track, indicating a transmission failure, probably in the rear axle. The end of the session saw Thomas Lindstrom as number one on 6.759/329 and the other Tommy (Leindahl) on the bump with 6.848/323.95 and 4 drivers on the outside with no remaining sessions to change the ladder.

Eliminations Sunday:

Pro Stock opened with Jan Palmqvist beating Sampsa Palos in a close race 6.814 to 6.819. Palos left first but it wasn't quite enough to even out the times. Jimmy Alund defeated Jonas Dantanus by a tenth with a 6.766/328.81 and Richard Sundlblom ended Michael Malmgren's weekend with a 6.790.  Thomas Lindstrom advanced to the semis by staying in front of Tommy Leindahl. A 6.790/330.15 being too much for the 6.831/326.14 reply.

The first semi put Palmqvist out of contention. His 6.877/322.44 was no match for the 6.751/328.51 in the other lane. The second semi was closer, with Alund (6.759) leaving first and staying just in front of Sundblom (327.91).

The final was over as soon as the tree activated, with Lindstrom trying too hard and pulling a red-light, and Alund running a 6.813/328.06 for the win light.

Leaving Alastaro and with two championship rounds remaining it is Ålund in the points lead 216, Palos is 2nd with 164 points and Lindström in 3rd place at 146 points. Still many points to earn and also drivers outside the top there can still advance.
